Wee Ski

Wee Ski, ages 4-5, lesson 1:00 pm-2:45 pm, Sat & Sun
$50 per skier, $5 lift ticket (required), $15 equipment rental (if needed), $10 helmet rental (optional)

Our Wee Skiiiiiiiii Program offers group lessons for kids ages 4-5 who have never skied or kids who have already tried skiing. Group size can be up to 8 kids per group, with two instructors. Wee Ski classes are held every Saturday and Sunday, from 1:00 - 2:45 pm. During the holiday season our kids program runs on Saturday and Sunday only; consider a private lesson during the weekdays.

During the first lesson, kids get a sense of what the equipment feels like, what it's like to be on the slippery snow, where the lifts are located and how to use them, how to move around the hill, etc.

Regardless of their level of ability, we find that children weighing less than 40 lbs. usually are not strong enough to last through an entire group lesson. This is a situation where we recommend a private lesson for kids just starting out.

We advise parents to consider their child's age, weight, temperament and attitude toward learning to ski when choosing an appropriate lesson. The very best and most economical way to get your child started right is to provide them with an introductory half-hour private lesson ($40) for their first time out. After the first lesson, parents and the child's instructor can make an evaluation about the appropriate next steps.

For young children who would like to learn snowboarding and are not skiers, we recommend that they learn to ski first. Skiing is easier to learn than starting right out with snowboarding and kids won't fall as much. Having their feet separated on skis allows kids more balance control. Less time spent picking yourself up off the ground means more fun on the snow!

Sign up at Bittersweet or download a Wee Ski form here, fill it out, and bring it with you to the Bittersweet Ski School.
Please arrive by 12:00 on the day of your lesson.
Reservations are strongly recommended and should be made the day before during the peak season. Contact the Ski School at (269) 694-2820, ext 15

Shredders are taught basic turning and stopping techniques to enable them to get the most out of a safe snowboarding season. Many Shredders get the hang of snowboarding after this first lesson, and have the rest of the day to practice their new skills. A good age to begin snowboarding is around 7 or 8 but this can vary with the temperament, attitude and physical abilities of the child.

We strongly recommend that all kids on snowboards are equipped with a helmet and wrist guards to prevent injury.

Junior Racers

Bittersweet Junior Racers Program

Junior Racers, every Saturday and Sunday, January 14th - February 18th (come out both days or just one which ever works with your schedule)

For ages 8-16. $150 per skier, discounted lift tickets for $20 will be available to the racer upon registration.

When kids reach the intermediate level, meaning that they know the basics, can ride the chairlift and can ski most of the runs at Bittersweet, they can progress to our Junior Racers program. This is the level at which kids show their greatest improvement because they are skiing regularly. Junior Racers also get great discounts on their lift tickets as well as special buys on equipment through our ski shop.

Junior Racers is intended to be a fun and educational improvement program for skiers 8 -16 years of age and intermediate skiing ability. The program is designed to educate the skier on the "hows and whys" of racing. But most of all, the program allows Juniors to have fun and meet other skiers.

Each racer will be given 2 complimentary NASTAR runs on Saturday and Sunday when the general NASTAR racer traffic allows. There is an awards party the last week of racing mom and dad won't want to miss.

You can save some time by downloading a Junior Racers form, filling it out, and bringing it with you to the Bittersweet Ski School.

Please call 269-694-2820, ext. 15 or email the ski school if you have any questions.

Junior Development Team

Bittersweet Junior Development Team (JDT)

$80 per skier, this fee is in addition to the base Junior racer fee of $150
JDT Practice runs from 12 pm - 1pm on Saturday and Sunday  (participate both days or just one which ever works with your schedule)

This program is the next step in racing for the Juniors. It is designed to improve your race skills as well as preparing you to become a serious racer. The program includes balance development, gate drills, course tactics, starts and finishes, slalom and giant slalom training plus individual and video analysis. Immediately after the base junior race program from 10 am - 12 pm, JDT skiers practice from 12 pm -1 pm Saturday and Sunday with the Junior Coaches. They will work exclusively on their racing skills.

JDT members should be familiar with a race course and ski all hills at Bittersweet with confidence. Skiers will be evaluated and Coaches must approve skiers for participation in this part of the program.

You can save some time by downloading a Junior Racers JDT form, filling it out, and bringing it with you to the Bittersweet Ski School.
Please call 269-694-2820, ext. 15 or email the ski school if you have any questions.

Adult Racing

Rick asks- "I'd like to race at Bittersweet this winter in the Adult Race League, but I don't know anyone who wants to race. How do I go about joining a team?"

Rick,
There are always teams looking for additional racers. Just sign up, and we'll get you on a team.
We race every Tuesday night at 6:30pm, 6 racers on a team. Sign up right away though, there's a "sign up and practice" night on January 9th (Monday) if you can make it, otherwise, racing begins Tuesday, January 10th. Here's how it works:

Teams will be formed for people who do not have a sponsor. Each team should consist of six racers. Each night, the top four of the six times will count towards team score. Open to all skiers 21 years and older. Cost is only $50 (cheap!) per person. Discounted lift tickets may be purchased one hour prior to the race for only $12. Just show your race bib to the friendly person at the ticket window to receive your discount.

Final signups & racing starts Tuesday, January 10th, 6:00 pm so don't procrastinate. If you can make it out January 9th, you can sign up and practice running through the gates.

Bittersweet Ski School will set the race courses for intermediate skiing abilities. One course will be a slalom course and the other a modified open slalom. The course will be open for inspection 15 minutes before start time on race night. Racers may side-slip the course, but not ski through any gates prior to the race. All racers must have their first run completed within 45 minutes of start time, and both runs completed within 90 minutes.

The running order will be random. Each racer is allowed two runs. You may run under your own bib number only.

Scoring will be based on the handicap system with a Bittersweet Ski Instructor as the "0" time or pacesetter. Each skier receives a Handicap based on their age and sex. Each racer receives points as follows:
  • 4 for gold
  • 3 for silver
  • 2 for bronze
  • 1 for participation
The total of the top four individual points will be the team score for the night. Team scores will be placed on Bittersweet's website (www.skibittersweet.com) and posted in our lounge.

Disqualification will result if:
  • Racer does not run
  • Racer skis through course incorrectly
  • Racer pre-runs the course
  • Racer does not have lift ticket
  • Other infractions of FIS rules
Download more information and a Race League application here.
Questions? Contact the Bittersweet Ski School. Please call 269-694-2820, ext. 15 or email the ski school here.
